Edison Energy Institute Tests
Candidates for skilled trade positions will be given one of the Edison Energy Institute test batteries. The specific battery you are given depends on the position. EEI tests are standardized, and EEI tests are formatted and customized to the job, and not the company. All power companies who are members of the EEI give the same tests.
EEI CAST Test
If you have applied for a job as a lineman, groundman, or any other construction position you will be given the CAST Test (Construction and Skilled Trade Selection System.)
- Graphic Arithmetic- This test has 2 drawings for you to use to solve 26 arithmetic questions. It is a multiple-choice test with a 30-minute time limit.
- Mechanical Concepts Assessment- This portion assesses your understanding of basic mechanical concepts. The questions involve basic systems like levers, pulleys, and gears. There are 44 questions and a 20-minute time limit.
- Reading For Comprehension- Your ability to understand rules and directions will be tested here. There are 4 brief passages, mostly consisting of information about safety rules and regulations in the power industry. There are 32 multiple-choice questions, and you will have 30 minutes to complete this test.
- Mathematical Usage- There are 18 multiple-choice arithmetic questions. You will have 30 minutes to complete this section.
EEI POSS/MASS Test
This is a combined test battery. It is designed for those who are in operating, and plant maintenance positions.
- Reading Comprehension- This multiple-choice test is made up of 36 questions about 5 passages you will be given to read. There is a 30-minute time limit on this test.
- Mathematical Usage- This test can vary from 18 or 46 arithmetic questions. The version you will be given depends on the job you are testing for. These tests are timed, with 7 minutes for the 18 questions test, and 17 minutes for the 46-question test.
- Mechanical Concepts- Your understanding of basic mechanics will be assessed with this 44-question test. The questions will feature diagrams of different machine systems, with some kind of problem. You will need to identify how to solve the problems in the diagrams. This test is multiple-choice, and 44 questions long. You will have 20 minutes to complete it.
- Tables and Graphs- This is a 2-part test where you will need to use tables and graphs to answer the multiple-choice questions. One section is 60 questions with a 5-minute time limit, the second is 24 24 questions with a 5-minute time limit.
- Spatial Ability (Figurative Reasoning)- This assessment features diagrams of disassembled machines. You need to be able to identify the various pieces and how they fit together. There are 20 multiple-choice questions, and the assessment has a time limit of 10 minutes.
EEI TECH Test
This assessment is given to graduates going into mathematical and mechanical engineering and chemistry positions in the energy industry.
- Reasoning From Rules- This is a logic network test; you will have 9 minutes to solve all 9 problems.
- Graphic Problem Solving- This is an arithmetic test that uses drawings to present the questions. There are 21 arithmetic problems and a 19-minute time limit.
- Interpreting Diagrams—This is a 9-minute test, during which you will use the symbols in a diagram to interpret and answer the 9 multiple-choice questions.
- Mechanical Concepts- This is a standard test of basic mechanical concepts. It focuses on simple machinery and using diagrams to show a problem that you will need to find the solution for. The test is multiple-choice with 44 questions and a 20-minute time limit.
EEI SOPD II
This test assesses the skills of those going into system operations and power dispatch.
- Mathematical Usage- Here you will need to solve several different types of math problems. You will need to solve formula conversion, basic algebra, and word problems. There are 16 multiple-choice questions and a 17-minute time limit.
- Analytic Thinking Skills- The questions on this test will measure your skills in the areas of problem-solving, argument, and logic-based reasoning. There are 23 multiple-choice questions, and you will have 17 minutes to complete the test.
- Reading Comprehension- This is a basic reading comprehension test that analyzes how well you can interpret written information. It is a multiple-choice test of 26 questions with a 22-minute time limit.
- Multitasking Simulation- This assessment tests your ability to effectively perform multiple tasks. You will need to perform memorization, basic math, listening, and visual monitoring. The tasks will be on screen at the same time, in different areas.
