The 7th Grade Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth Test is a computer-adaptive standardized test that measures your child’s growth and progress throughout the year. Each student will receive a unique testing experience since the questions will become progressively easier or more difficult depending on how your child answers the previous question.
This exam is given to students in grades K-12 in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. The exam is untimed, and the goal is for your child to score better on the test than the previous semester.
The 7th grade version of the MAP Growth Test has three primary sections: Reading, Math, and Language Use. However, some schools will also offer a science section. Be sure to ask your school administrator if your child will need to prepare for a science MAP test.
The Reading test consists of 40 to 43 questions. Previous MAP Reading exams were focused on the act of reading. However, because your child is getting older, this test will be more focused on the content of the text. Your child can expect to answer questions on the following:
The Math test will have between 47 and 53 questions. Students in the 7th grade are learning new mathematical topics, such as scientific notation, and are working with more complex numbers, such as percentages. Your child can expect to encounter the following topic areas on this exam:
The Language Usa test will have between 50 and 53 questions and will focus on specific writing mechanics. Students can expect to answer questions about the following topic areas:
All MAP Growth Tests are scored using the standardized Rasch unIT (RIT) scale. As soon as they finish the test, your 7th grader will receive a score report with two sections showcasing their RIT score in each subject and giving other information.
The first section of the score report will be a graph that shows your child’s individual progress in that subject, how they compare to other students their age, and their predicted progress in that subject. The report’s second section will be a table that shows their actual RIT score, how that has changed since the last semester, and the projection of their future growth.
This report is a greay way for teachers to identify students that are struggling in any subjects. However, it is important to remember that the goal of the test is not to reach a specific benchmark, just for your child to increase their score from the last time they took the test.
The below table shows the average RIT scores for 7th grade students.
MAP Test Section | Average Fall Score | Average Winter Score | Average Spring Score |
Reading | 214 | 217 | 218 |
Math | 220 | 224 | 227 |
Language Use | 213 | 215 | 216 |
The following are tips that your 7th grader can follow to increase their score on the MAP Growth Test:
The best way to prepare for the MAP Growth Test is to practice at home using free online resources such as practice tests and study guides.
Practice tests are great because they provide sample questions similar to what will be on the exam. This gives your child a chance to work through a simulated testing scenario stress-free. This will help boost their confidence and help them feel more comfortable for the actual exam.
Study guides are also excellent resources because they give tips for what will be on the exam. This information will allow you and your child to tailor their studying to ensure they focus on areas in which they need more practice.
Students who follow a study plan are more likely to increase their scores on the MAP Growth Test, so it is essential to encourage your child to prepare for the exam.
