NNAT Serial Reasoning Test Preparation and Tips – 2024

G&T Tests Prep

If you have a child who is hoping to be admitted into a gifted and talented program, they will be required to score well on the NNAT exam. The serial reasoning section is just one section of the entire exam, and this article will focus on helping your child receive the highest scores possible.

What Are the NNAT Serial Reasoning Test Sections?

The serial reasoning portion of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) is just one section of the entire assessment. During this section, the students will notice 9 boxes spread across three rows and columns. 8 out of the 9 boxes will include a shape that is following some sort of pattern. However, 1 of the 9 boxes will be missing a shape. The students will be asked to search through the answers to find the piece that would fit and match with the 9th box. The first time that students will be asked to complete a serial reasoning portion of the exam will be in the 1st grade.

How to Read NNAT Serial Reasoning Test Section Score Report?

  • Raw Score: Two months post-exam you will likely collect the score report through the mail. The original score listed on the report will be the raw score, and it will have two numbers. This could look like 48/48, which would mean that out of 48 questions, your child answered every single question correctly.
  • Naglieri Ability Index (NAI): Once your raw score has been evaluated and normalized, it is referred to as the NAI score. Although the average NAI score is a 100, it is completely possible to score as high as 160. However, once the scores have been normalized, your student will likely only score between 85 to 116 percent.
  • Percentile Rank: The final score on the score report is the percentile rank, which is simply a comparison of every student’s scores that are within 3 months in age. Your child will be given a percentage that represents how well they did compared to other nationwide students. Thus, say your child receives a 65%, this means that their score was the same as or better than 65% of other same-age children.

NNAT Serial Reasoning Tips

  1. Familiarize your child with the idea of a matrix. The simplest way to do this is by teaching your child to look at individual rows and columns, and ask them if they are able to recognize any patterns within those individual rows.
  2. Teach your child about the changes that most commonly occur. In many cases, the questions and boxes will include similar patterns, such as changing colors, rotating shapes, and shapes or figures that disappear. Look through practice exams, identify the patterns that you see most often, and then teach your child about those patterns.
  3. When in doubt, use the process of elimination. If all else fails, you can always rely on the process of elimination. Help your child look at every single individual answer, and eliminate any answers that clearly do not fit into the pattern. Continue this method until you have found the answer that fits the pattern.

How to Prepare for the NNAT Serial Reasoning Test?

If your child has just entered the 1st grade, this will likely be their initial time taking the serial reasoning part of the NNAT test. For this reason, your child may feel apprehensive about taking this exam. Help them overcome this fear by introducing them to practice exams. Practice exams will help any child become accustomed with certain patterns and will help them become prepared to overcome any obstacles they encounter on the test.

Teach your child to not rush through the questions. It is extremely easy to make a mistake if a child does not fully comprehend the pattern within the shapes. In many cases, some students struggle with recognizing object rotation. Run through several practice exams that also include explanations with your student, and if they are unable to notice shapes and figures that are rotating or flipping, point it out to them. You can also assist them by drawing the figures on a piece of paper and then flipping the paper over to show them how the objects flip.
